For the first time in advertising history in the U.K, online advertising expenditure has overtaken TV to become the biggest advertising medium. As reported by the Internet Advertising Bureau, online advertising expenditure grew 4.6% to £1.75 billion in H1 2009, despite the tough economic conditions which has seen the advertising sector in general contracting by 16.6%, during the same period.

Some indicators to the drivers of this change, include the ability to effectively target and measure online campaigns, a rise in ecommerce, alongside faster and cheaper broadband services.
